Design is a process.
I often use an iterative process when developing my designs, especially in 2-dimensions. I break down the composition into a step-by-step process, making multiple versions of each step and only moving forward with the ones I find most visually appealing and engaging. The images below outline this process of using gradual addition to make a refined design; for each of the first three images there were several other versions that got thrown away.
I started with 5 vertical lines.
Next I filled in four sections.
Then I added a diagonal line and 5 tones.
Finally I added transparency layers and created a color palate inspired by mid-century modernist art.
